Types of Hard Armour

What kinds of body armor are there?

The Different Types of Body Armour
  • Kevlar® Soft Armour Vests. Kevlar® made vests are soft armour vests made from tightly woven, extremely strong fibres. ...
  • Hard Ballistic Plates. For an individual who is under much greater threat, rifle resistant armour is an alternative choice to Kevlar® armour. ...
  • Stab and Spike Proof Vests.

Soft armor is usually made of a fabric-like material with extreme strength such as Kevlar, Spectra, Twaron, and so on. Soft armor can come in many shapes and forms, but it is most commonly worn as a vest. Although it is flexible and easy-to-wear, soft body armor is not as strong as its hard counterpart.

What is the strongest body armor?

NIJ Level IV

This is the highest rating of body armor currently available, and it will stop armor piercing rifle threats! Level IV armor withstands up to 30-06 M2ap steel core armor piercing rounds with a mass of 166 grains and a velocity of 2880 ft/s.

Will AK 47 penetrate body armor?

There's only one bulletproof-type vest that can stop a 7.62 mm full metal jacket steel round from an AK-47, and only the U.S. military has that.
Normally a NIJ Level IIIA bullet proof vest in combination with Level IV hard armor panels can stop AK-47 rounds including armor piercing.

What specific materials are used in military body armor?

Kevlar, steel and Polyethylene (PE) are the most used materials in the manufacture of body armor. Kevlar and PE are mainly used to make soft body armor, while steel and ceramic are used to make hard body armour.
